Scenes from A Void is a work for incurable insomniacs, people who are completely unsure, people who wake up with their head in a whirl. Based loosely on Georges Perec’s La Disparition - a novel written without using the letter E, a powerful metaphor for loss, distraction, and nothingness - Scenes from A Void presents audiences with an exhausting, dizzying exploration of emotional extremes. The libretto, created by eight virtuosic poets, consists of seven re-interpretations of wildly-different, well-known works of literature. These are set to music: microtonally-tuned, found, and amplified instruments are used concurrently with a more standard ensemble in service of finding and engaging with new expressive modalities. Scenes from A Void immerses its audience in distraction, indulgence, and emptiness – an intense and excessive search for identity in a plural age.
